On 2nd November Romy was admitted to hospital again to start her first cycle of Anti GD2. This infusion would run over 10 days and be repeated in cycles every 35 days. The hope is that the lab-made proteins will attach to GD2 substances on the surface of neuroblastoma cells and help the body’s immune system find and destroy them. There are a whole raft of possible side effects including severe nerve pain, so Romy is on three different painkillers including a constant morphine infusion and two antihistamines to help avoid allergic reactions. Other possible side effects are capillary leak syndrome, cough, skin rash, liver dysfunction, and other syndromes and neurological events. Romy did really well on the first cycle of anti GD2, she didnt experience any pain, possibly because the concoction of pain relief was spot on, but we will not know how well she is really tolerating it until the second cycle as this is when the effect can sometimes show.
