Romy’s First Surgery

Romy’s first surgery to have her central line put in, a biopsy of the tumour and bone marrow sample. We were told we would have a ten minute warning and as the PPBF flat is just 5 minutes away after waiting all morning I went back to the flat, when they called Romy to theatre without the ten minute warning! I rushed back but daddy and the nurse were just taking her down in the lift, like sliding doors my lift door was opening as their lift door on the opposite side of the corridor was closing.

Romy’s surgery was 3 hours. It was tense waiting as one of the surgeons had told us we could expect it to be an hour and a half. It turns out surgeons often forget to allow for anaesthetic and recovery time or only talk about the time for their “bit”, not the other surgeons’ parts.

It was hard thinking about her waking up in the recovery room to strangers in masks but until they are happy she is stable they can’t call parents in to see their children in recovery. Romy was understandably grumpy and uncomfortable and a little distressed.
